Continuing my pension for posting every single thing Spike Jonze ever touches…

In 1994 Spike Jonze Directed a Beastie Boys video for the song “Sabatoge,” which instantly became my favorite all-time music video and made me a lifetime fan of both Spike and the Beasties.

This short-film (or long-form music vid?) just released – with Spike making more awesome stuff with the Beastie Boys.

I know at least a couple dudes who are gonna flip out when they see this.

Roger Ebert says this short film shot & cut during the blizzard in NYC a couple weeks ago should win the Academy Award. I don’t know if that’s a real possibility, but it would definitely be more-than groundbreaking for a youtube video to be considered among the top industry films of the year. It should be so, though… and could inspire millions of solo filmakers to consider creating beautiful films just because they should be created. Here’s Ebert’s 3 reasons Idiot with a Tripod should win the award:

1. Because of its wonderful quality.
2. Because of its role as homage. It is directly inspired by Dziga Vertov’s 1929 silent classic “Man With a Movie Camera.”
3. Because it represents an almost unbelievable technical proficiency.

Generally I side more with Roeper (or Siskel back in the day) but I love how this film creates a story that gets you cheering without any plot, dialogue, writing or characters.

It definitely inspires me to create movies again.

However, having spent a lot of time editing on the fly and shooting with DSLR, I know what’s required to create something like this (maybe more than Ebert might). I don’t have the knowledge of film history that he does of course, but obviously incorporating such homage is quite valuable. When stacked against something like Spike Jonze’s I’m Here… I don’t think this film even comes close.

I do hope it gets recognized though… just for the sake of indie filmmakers everywhere.

I’ve had perma-grin all week listening to this.

I’ve said before that I’m a sucker for collaborative music projects.

Mashups aren’t really collaboration, but combining all different genres of music into one track has the same kind of affect on me. Even though most mashups are pretty forgettable, they are almost always fun to begin with.

Girl Talk (aka Gregg Michael Gillis) however is anything but forgettable.

Where most mashups take a song by one artist and a song by another and combine them together, Girl Talk takes literally hundreds of samples from hundreds of artists (20 different songs sampled in just the first track of All Day) to create a musical collage that only someone really committed to his art (and really really skilled) could pull off. (check out this Wikipedia entry listing every artist & track sampled on the album)

If the music alone weren’t enough, Girl Talk secures his place of awesomeness by releasing his work as a free download from his record label’s website.

Amazing.

Three Reasons Girl Talk’s All Day is Irresistible

1. It is a real album
   This thing is designed to hear in one listen. The tracks have names and you can skip from one to the next, but when you listen to the whole album straight through you can’t tell where one “song” ends and the next begins. I kind of think this is like a painting… and the way more pop albums should be (or maybe were before digital music came along)
2. Surprise after surprise
   Just when you start to get in the groove and almost believe that Cream and Notorious B.I.G were always meant to be together (like chocolate and peanut butter) you’ve all-of-a-sudden moved into a Grand Funk Railroad-New Order-Birdman/Lil Wayne combination. You can’t help but smile when he brings in the stuff you’d never have imagined
3. The ending
   You could skip ahead and just listen to the last track. But that would be like landing a helicoptor on Mt. Everest. Take the trek through this magical mystery tour and you’ll be rewarded in the end with something absolutely breathtaking.

Disclaimer: If All Day were legal enough to be sold in stores, it would definitely have an “Explicit Content” warning label. If you take a hundred lyrics from a hundred hip-hop tracks you can’t really avoid it being rated R.

I wouldn’t agree with all the selections, but most of them made me smile.

I’d definitely put Tommy Boy in Ohio for example.

I have no idea how this released in March and I just discovered it today.

While I and everyone else was flipping out about Where the Wild Things are this winter, Spike Jonze was busy creating his first ever love-story film.

Of course, leave it to Spike Jonze to do so in the form of a short film about robots.

I honestly just finished watching this film and there is so much I could say… but you’ve really got to just see it for yourself.

It’s based on Shel Silvestein’s magical and timeless story of The Giving Tree, so as you can imagine the film is sad and hopeful and heartbreaking and inspiring all at once.

If you have a lunch break today, gather everyone around a computer, dim the lights and enjoy this together.

Joshua asks “Did I turn out to be the son you wanted when I was born? Like, did I meet your expectations?”

First of all I can’t watch those 10 seconds without totally losing it.

Second…

I honestly don’t know what I’d say if my son were to ask me the same question.

If I were completely honest, I’d have to say no.

He’s not at all what I imagined.

In fact I never could have imagined such a child.

But…

He’s the perfect kid for me.

He’s taught me about real compassion and how to love and what it means to be human.

I’m a much better person since he is in my life.
