(500) Days of The Smiths

(500) Days of Summer is the best thing I’ve seen in a while.
The title sequence alone is a great reminder of why I love movies.
But I think what really made me love it was how familiar it was.
Eerily so.
It probably had a lot to do with my personality echoing Tom’s.
Fearful, obsessive, needy, escapist… and quite blind to the real truth.
Then the music played…
and the music took a familiar story and connected it so closely to my own that I could have sworn someone had been following me around for the last decade.
Tom karaoke-ing The Pixies, a mention of Octopus’s Garden, and I couldn’t believe it when I heard Carla Bruni playing in their car.
Then there was The Smiths.
When Tom and Summer’s first meeting and consequent relationship centered on The Smiths…
I can’t even really describe how it made me feel.
Because whenever I hear The Smiths I am transported to the early days with my wife.
My first trip to New Jersey to see her…
walking along the tracks
and night streets lit with humming lamps
and sunlit rooms
and no worries
and no plans
and no idea what was next
Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want
Good times for a change
See, the luck I’ve had
Can make a good man
Turn badSo please please please
Let me, let me, let me
Let me get what I want
This timeHaven’t had a dream in a long time
See, the life I’ve had
Can make a good man badSo for once in my life
Let me get what I want
Lord knows, it would be the first time
Lord knows, it would be the first time
