Ida Maria (or What I Learned about Jesus from Black Metal)

Norway is known for metal.
Face-melting black metal.
I however am apparently in love with its indie pop.
(not to mention every time I encounter a Norwegian illustrator my heart skips a beat)
Ida Maria seems to bridge that gap perfectly… all the darkness and energy of Emperor (ok, maybe not that dark) but with a fun, quirky indie feeling.
like saying “i’m dead inside!” with a smile and skip in your step.
Her album Fortress ’round My Heart is aptly titled considering the heartbreak she’s expressing. (and might be the best album of 2009)
Every time we’re hurt we put up one more brick in that wall.
Like a callous I guess… with each wound or scuff or irritation it grows tougher and tougher until you can’t really feel anything anymore.
and it seems like a calloused heart is writing every one of these songs…
The song “Stella” might seem sacrilegious to some… but I find it challenging and provocative.
A statement that we’ve shunned God’s advances so thoroughly that he’s had to seek out a prostitute just to feel loved.
but I guess Jesus did just that, didn’t he?
Maybe it’s the truly downtrodden who can understand the purity and power of the love of God.
Love that can melt away the bulwarks guarding my heart the way that Emperor can melt your face with fiery licks of black metal rawk.
(and they said it was impossible to use Emperor and Jesus in a simile)
