Sleeping at Last: Storyboards

I can’t really remember how I discovered Sleeping at Last… I know it was quite a while after I should have discovered them.
In 2003 (or so) they were spotted by Billy Corgan, who took them under his wing, hooked them up with a label and even took them on tour with his Smashing-Pumkins-hiatus-side-project Zwan…
In 2008, I was lucky enough to get permission from Sleeping at Last to use some tunes in a couple video projects I was working on for the camp (Exiled Promo and a Summer Camp promo)
The new album Storyboards is good… a lot like their others… with just the right amount of similarities without sounding like the same old thing all over again.
The thing that sets these guys apart is how they manage to pack so much emotion and spirituality and introspection into their music without falling prey to the cheesiness that would undoubtedly be the result if anyone else attempted such a concoction.
And when i say “emotion” I mean it… if you’ve never heard music that makes you cry… even without any lyrics… this is it.
And their soul-searching lyrics only add to the lump in my throat… they always seem to hit the proverbial nail on the head.
On “Green Screen” they speak specifically about a personal struggle I’ve been trying to come to terms with lately… conflict.
How I’ll do just about anything to avoid conflict or pain… even though it’s causing more hurt in the long run.
if only our futures could be tamed,
suddenly our past would have no say.
and in the emergence of film, pouring overhead,
our bodies relearn how to feel.
and somehow the screen embodies every ideal
as the orchestra so sweetly reveals,
and the background artist carries us there…
the conflict compliments repair.
