The National: High Violet
Posted by Troy | Filed under Music

For some reason I did not have high expectations for this new album from The National.
I guess maybe because Boxer was so good I just assumed whatever came next would be a disappointment.
Well… I should have given these guys more credit.
Because this may turn out to be my favorite record of the year.
All the songwriting is wonderful as you’d expect. Sad but wonderful.
As you’d expect.
I can relate to a lot of the struggle. Although my personal struggles have been more internal and less relational, I’ve been learning the connectedness of those two parts of my life.
“Runaway” speaks of the trials of life and how even when those closest to us throw their arms in surrender I must persevere.
Not only that, but I must embrace the trials as a fundamental part of my story. Not that I enjoy them, but they are the strongest of odors.
The ones that really remind me that I’m alive.
Runaway
There’s no saving anything
Now we’re swallowing the shine of the summer
There’s no saving anything
How we swallow the sunBut I won’t be no runaway
Cause I won’t run
No I wont be no runaway
What makes you think I’m enjoying being led to the flood? We got another thing coming undone
And its taking us over
We don’t bleed when we don’t fight
Go ahead, go aheadThrow your arms in the air tonight
We don’t bleed when we don’t fight
Go ahead, go ahead
Lose our shirts in the fire tonightWhat makes you think I’m enjoying being led to the flood?
We got another thing coming undone
And it’s taking foreverI’ll go braving everything
With you swallowing the shine of the summer
I’ll go braving everything
Through the shine of the sunBut I won’t be no runaway
Cause I won’t run
No I won’t be no runaway
Cause I won’t run
