Accidentally True Story

Walked out to the forest, plugged in my headphones to some Neko Case and started writing a story about a girl named Nadya and her family.
I used some historical facts and stories as a basis, but for the most part I was just making stuff up…
The story was the foundational scenario for a youth retreat… a retreat for which I’d imagined new scenarios for several years… and I had the idea this particular year to promote the retreat with a story rather than your stereotypical “camp is a blast and you should come” video.
What was really amazing was this… when our friends arrived from Romania… they told me how true that video was.
When I heard them share their stories of the revolution… I was blown away by the similarities… it was really amazing.
I’m still proud of the work I did on this… definitely some things I wish I’d done better, but had very little time and no budget… Sleeping at Last agreed to let me use the music… which pretty much made this thing come alive.
I was really lucky to have my sister-in-law contribute the background drawings and my good buddy Steve do the character pencil sketches—quite a few of which were sketched out in a matter of minutes and emailed to me so I could try to finish a scene…
He and I were both a little disappointed that some of our favorite drawings either didn’t make the final cut or were so briefly featured that you couldn’t really see the attention to detail…but Strong Odors seems to be the perfect place to share a few…
Check out these sweet never-before-seen exiled sketches:
