Breathe Owl Breathe: Magic Central and Live at Higher Grounds
Posted by Troy | Filed under Music, Traverse City

I’ve seen Bob Dylan a few times… once even at the front of an 80,000 member crowd at ACL 2007.
I’ve also seen Sufjan in a performance that I unavoidably describe with the ultra-corny cliché ”life changing.” (sorry)
But I must say that this past Sunday’s performance by Breathe Owl Breathe at my favorite local coffee roastery was my first real folk concert.

Herbie Weiderman

My sophmore year of college (ca. 1997) I met this guy named Herb.
We were moderate aquaintances for the first few weeks of school because we had some friends in common.
Until one day when I noticed he had a flying =w= symbol drawn on his hand—a symbol now universally know as Weezer’s “logo” but at the time almost a secret symbol that connected only the “real fans.”
When I asked about it I could see his eyes light up and his dimples grow deep.

Brandi Carlile Live at Interlochen

Last night we took our 8-yr-old daughter to her first real concert… she is a totally right-brained kid who loves art and music so I knew she’d love it and I had been looking forward to this for a really long time.
Since I’d seen Brandi Carlile last summer I knew she’d be a great first-concert experience for my daughter… and of course I was right.
The evening opened up with a pretty decent performance from The Watson Twins. I’d have to say the highlight of their show was their two covers, “Ain’t No Sunshine,” and “Just Like Heaven.”
Of course those happen to be two of my all-time-top-ten favorite songs, ones of such magnificence that I’d get emotional even if Rosie O’Donnell was performing them.
The twins did much better than Rosie would though and their Neil-Young-Cripple-Creek-Fairy take on The Cure was pretty dang cool. (check out the not-quite-as-hippie version in my playlist)
But when Brandi took the stage it was like time stopped.

Red Baraat at Barbès Brooklyn
Posted by Troy | Filed under Music, Travel

You can’t visit New York without catching some live music, and you can’t catch live music like this anywhere but New York.
Cram an Indian marching band, a jazz ensemble, a funk band and 100 audience members (of every race and creed) into a 200 sq. ft. room.
That is Red Baraat at Barbès in Brooklyn.
Thanks Paul for encouraging me to attend.
