Sufjan Stevens: The Age of Adz

It’s been 5 years.

Maybe that’s how long it takes one artist to figure out how he’s going to make another album without (a) creating more of the same (b) selling out or (c) creating “art” so inaccessible that it loses its impact.

(or maybe he was busy creating a “masterpiece” integrating modern classical music, film, design and visual art)

Whatever it was, I spent the past 5 years worrying that whatever his follow up to Illinoise would be (South Dakota? Hawaii?) was going to be a disappointing re-creating of that album or an attempt to avoid it with intolerable weirdness.

Illinoize: Sufjan Mashed

illinoize

I’m a sucker for collaborative music.

I haven’t watched any MTV awards shows for years, but I remember they always used to include at least one collaboration per event… usually between a big-time pop star and a music legend.

Sometimes they’re lame, sometimes they’re good, sometimes they should be good but end up lame

but I always get choked up at the key change.

I’m kind of a sucker for mashups and remixes too…

but a good remix is hard to find.

Pretty much anything with Sufjan gets me excited though and so far I’m enjoying the chill vibe on this one.

I’m always looking for cool remix albums… got a recommendation?
