In the early 20-aughts Weezer would do secret shows under the moniker Goat Punishment.
A lot of the times they’d do Nirvana covers and eventually new unreleased =w= material too.
I think they kind of quit doing it once word got out who Goat Punishment really was.

Sadaam Gets Weezer-ed

This photo and story would probably be more moving if Steve had died in the war. He didn’t die. He’s still alive. I’m glad.
My earliest Weezer-related memories are with Steve.
I remember digging the tape (the one I dubbed from the CD on my boombox) out of the console in the Monte Carlo and handing it to Steve in the passenger seat and saying “you have to hear this!”
He was a little hesitant becuause at the time he was trudging through some of his personal theology, trying to figure out if the standards of our church (which condemned any music with a rock beat) were true and his own…

Herbie Weiderman

My sophmore year of college (ca. 1997) I met this guy named Herb.
We were moderate aquaintances for the first few weeks of school because we had some friends in common.
Until one day when I noticed he had a flying =w= symbol drawn on his hand—a symbol now universally know as Weezer’s “logo” but at the time almost a secret symbol that connected only the “real fans.”
When I asked about it I could see his eyes light up and his dimples grow deep.

Rivers – I’m Your Daddy

When our last baby boy arrived, we really had no idea what to call him.
We hadn’t even been talking about it much because it was such a stressful time in our lives.
I was finishing an internship and about to be unemployed. We had just discovered that our other son Gideon has Autism.
And the day before the baby arrived I found out that I (once again) had cancer.
So yeah, not a lot of spare energy to discuss baby names.

Weezer: Hurley

There will never be another blue album.
There will never be another Pinkerton.
However, as much as I respected Weezer’s commitment to “do the things I wanna do” with Raditude, I’m really excited to see them stripping down (did I just say that) on this new record and getting back to a more nostalgic sound.
Back to rock & roll and with a outpouring of emotion that we haven’t seen from them in many, many years.
I seriously can’t wait to blast this in the car and sing along. I may actually leave the house for a change just so I can do so.

Giggling in Pain

So in the spring of 1994 Kurt Cobain died.
Might not mean much to most, but to me it did.
Not that I was one of the fanatical Nirvana kids—not even close. But somehow Kurt Cobain had affected me.
Maybe it was what he said, or how he said it.
But really I think it was just the music.
Which he would have been glad to hear.
I don’t think I even realized it at the time, but as much as I found emotional freedom in Nirvana’s magic, it was totally hopeless.
“Nothing” was the fundamental message.
The bohemians failed, love and peace and all that crap lost to money and power and socio-economic darwinism.
And our generation was not going to be made a fool of like the one before.
So we avoided.
The only unforgivable sin was to care too much about anything.
